Creative Corner with Denise Allan

Denise Allan is director of 677 Media Management based in Glasgow: "We continue to work with Glasvegas who release their fourth album April 21, and have moved on to a renaissance of female Scottish talent with new music released from them all in 2021. Complementing Glasvegas we have Freakwave, Lamaya, Cherry and Steph Johnston also on our roster."

Here's our recent chat with Denise to discuss her favourite campaigns in 2020 and talk about the overlaps between visual creativity and music.

I’m currently working on assisting James Allan, lead singer of Glasvegas, who always has a strong vision for the creative. Every single aspect is created or approved by him as we line up assets supporting monthly single releases and an album in 2021.

CHECK OUT

Creatively at the moment I’m loving Arlo Parks.  Whoever is coming up with the artwork, logo, colour choices and photos seems like one single vision as it's consistent, fits the music and still really stands out as it's so stylised yet still delicate.

FAVOURITE VIDEO

My all-time favourite music video is Kanye West's Flashing Lights. Videos are one of the biggest gambles your artist can take without really being sure of the outcome. And money does not always equate to quality. This song is stellar but the video idea is super simple. I love the violence; it looks very cathartic plus Rita G's body jiggles in all the right places.

BEST ARTWORK

I’ve always loved the album art for Madonna's True Blue. She looks like the most graceful beautiful swan with a ghostly feel. This image is seared in my mind having stared at it as a kid wondering who this mysterious hypnotizing woman is. Madonna looks like she is from another world in this photo. It is a big departure from the album before it Like A Virgin. I later had dinner with Seymour Stein; the kid in me couldn't believe it.

CAMPAIGN OF 2020

The best creative campaign this year has been Bree Runway. She is electric, beautiful and full of attitude and I like how the different facets of her personality have really been bolstered. The creative campaign seems like an extension of her personality where there's a mix of so many influences that seem to blend rather than fight each other. It feels high octane but natural.

BEST COLLABORATION

The most recent brand collab that caught my eye was Lady Leshurr X Olay. I thought she was a natural, but we definitely don't see enough women of colour partner with skincare brands. I'd really like to see this change.

VIDEO OF THE YEAR

For me the most creative and original music video of the year is Gorillaz Strange Timez (ft Robert Smith). I'm obsessed with all their videos, as are my kids. The drawings and stories are just so mind-blowingly cool. In fact, my son dressed up as Noodle for Halloween this year. He won 1st prize!

LOGO LOVE

I wish I’d designed the artist logo for Haim. Strong and iconic with a feminine feel to it.

GO FOLLOW

The one artist you should follow on Instagram is Bow Anderson from Edinburgh.  Beautiful and soulful.

ICONIC

The most iconic music photograph is Grace Jones on her album cover Island Life. It has been imitated many times but there is only one. It was very much influenced by the times but what I love most is how it was really taken to the extreme.
