The Gardener's Muse by Takeshi Suga

In the autumn of 2014, I worked closely with Leftovers, a popular vintage fashion shop at Brixton Village, London to create a lookbook entitled The Gardener's Muse. It is a collection of poetic pictures illustrating what we have to offer. It is an emphasis of a timeless period. Of classiness and beauty.

Prior to the release of the lookbook, teaming up with Lomography UK and Japan, I premiered some images at my solo exhibition at Lomography+ Tokyo. The exhibition got a mention on some prominent fashion websites including Vogue Japan and Fashion Press.

I feel my aesthetics, when it comes to photography, are akin to those of the Impressionists. I’d known the owner of Leftovers for a year. We share the same aesthetics.

So I approached her to create something together.

I was particularly inspired by a French film called Renoir (2012).

The shoot took place in Brockwell Park, London. All the photos were taken using a Petzval lens from Lomography, which enhanced the painting-like quality of my work. Many people were surprised to hear it was taken in London because the images were filled with such vibrant colours and in the beautiful light!

The lens was a reinvention of the legendary lens of the same name originally conceived in 1840!

And the fantastical look the lens creates is perfect for the project.
