Live visuals for Independent by inkhorus

I noticed that artists tend to move their body quite a lot in live performances, and I was interested in how gestures tend to be lost and left untranslated.

These questions shaped my goal of going against the concept of assigning planned dynamics, giving way to a constraints-free and not pre-determined VJ via body movement. The project wants to give artists and performers a way to generate visuals according to music regardless of their design skill levels.

To do so, I devised a toolbox of effects that respond to Kinect skeleton tracking. My aim was to show escalating visual rhythms that can be generated live, changeable at will just by getting further from the Kinect sensor. Starting from a simple colour application, to brushstrokes, pattern generation and multiple dynamic objects, I provided several levels of freedom and graphic rhythm intensity.
