Reclaim Her Name - Baileys x VMLY&R

Throughout history, many female writers had to use male pen names for their work to be published or taken seriously.To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Women's Prize for Fiction, Bailey's Irish Cream re-released 25 books with their female author's real name on them for the first time. This included books like Middlemarch by Mary Allen Evans, and Painted Clay by Doris Boake Kerr.

To keep with the theme of celebrating women, VMLY&R decided to commission only female illustrators to design the covers for the books. I initially designed six covers, which - after refinement - led to three of my illustrations being included within the collection.

Echoes from Mistland - Aubertine Woodward Moore (pen name Auber Forestier), is a German novel following the Mulan esque story of a young woman who becomes a warrior to defend her family.

The Roadmender - Margaret Fairless Barber (pen name Michael Fairless). The three part story of a labourer who uses his time working on the roads to observe the natural world around him, a simple and beautifully cyclical story.

Takekurabe or 'Growing Up' - Natsu Higuchi (pen name Ichiyō Higuchi) the story of 13 year old Midori as she grows up among two rival teenage gangs living in a red light district in Tokyo.
